Shark Attacks: A Growing Concern
Increased Shark Encounters Worldwide
The Florida Museum of Natural History's International Shark Attack File has reported a worrying trend: the number of shark-human interactions has been rising steadily in recent years. In 2023, there were 120 alleged shark attacks worldwide, a significant increase from previous years.
Bloody Beginnings of the 21st Century
The beginning of the 21st century has been particularly bloody in terms of shark attacks. Between 2001 and 2010, an average of 43 people died from shark attacks each year, with 2000 seeing a particularly high number of 79 reported attacks and 11 fatalities.
Unprovoked Attacks on the Rise
Unprovoked shark attacks, where the shark initiates contact with a human without provocation, have also been increasing. In 2023, there were 63 unprovoked shark attacks worldwide, with 5-6 resulting in death.
How to Avoid a Shark Attack
While shark attacks are rare, it's important to be aware of the risks and take precautions when swimming or surfing in areas frequented by sharks:
- Avoid swimming in areas with poor visibility or high turbidity.
- Stay away from areas where fishermen are cleaning their catch.
- Do not swim in areas where there are known shark sightings.
- Swim in groups, as sharks are less likely to attack larger groups.
- Use caution when entering the water from a boat.
